What To Expect

Join us for a day ride to Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary for 3 hours of environmental education and service. We will join with volunteers from the Lake View Citizens Council in stewardship activities such as litter pickup, trail mulching, invasive plant removal, and more.

We will meet at the Patagonia Chicago Mag Mile store (48 E Walton St) at 9am for coffee and a Patagonia product giveaway. Your RSVP to the event and a suggested donation of $5 (or more!) to support our friends at Out Our Front Door will enter you to win. If you'd like a chance to win some awesome Patagonia gear, direct your donation here: https://www.oofd.org/

At 9:20am, we will head out on bikes to Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary, with our service day ending around 1pm. The ride will be roughly 4.5 miles on mostly path. If you can't make the ride up, but want to volunteer for the day we love that! Meet us at the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary at 2 West Belmont Harbor Drive Chicago, IL 60657. Afterwards, we'll have an optional hangout to get lunch and a drink nearby.

What to Bring:

•

A thermos with a lid (carryable by bike) that you can fill up for our day! To keep things as safe as possible for folks we're going to make this a coffee outside affair, who doesn't like hot drinks with a view?

•

Your bike in good working order, a spare tube, and a bike lock.

•

Water and snacks. We'll give you some Patagonia Provisions, but if you have a go-to snack, bring that just in case.

•

Gardening gloves if you want your own, they will provide some at the sanctuary. We will likely be removing some thorny, woody plants so long sleeves and sturdy pants are a must!

•

Clothes to keep you warm and dry. We'll be riding rain or shine and this is an outdoor event so prepare for the weather!

•

Any knowledge you'd like to share about local ecosystems, flora or fauna and why we love them!

Get to Know Our Event Partners

Out Our Front Door

www.oofd.org

Out Our Front Door is a Chicago non-profit that leads bike adventures to immerse and educate in local nature and history. We deepen folks' reverence for the native habitats of the Lake Michigan area by leading these trips for adults, youth, families and folks with disabilities. In addition, we care for our home and lead day rides to partner with local organizations in their habitat conservation service days. So join us for this Where the Wild Things Grow ride.

The Where The Wild Things Grow program helps engage the bicycle community's involvement in ecological restoration throughout the Chicagoland trail network system. The programs foundation is to support those organizations that already are doing the crucial work to help conserve and restore our native habitats

Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary

www.jarvissanctuary.org

The volunteers of the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Chicago's Lincoln Park are dedicated to maintaining, improving and creating a nature area on Chicago's lakefront. We hope to enhance this Sanctuary so that it can be home to many native species of plants and animals that would otherwise be missing from this urban environment. We also want to provide essential habitat for migrating birds to rest and feed in during their journeys. We look to diverse natural areas for our inspiration, and try to bring some of that diversity to this microcosm of nature in Chicago.
